Four Leaf Clover Charms

With an actual four leaf clover - as opposed to a charm representation of one - you have to FIND it for it to bring you luck. You're not supposed to buy it or even actively LOOK for it! I'm glad I didn't know that as a child because I spent hours looking for four-leaf clovers. This concept should put out of business the places that sell them by the truckload - I believe they feed the clover plant with a genetically engineered food which causes the mutation.

However, I've never heard of any need to find a charm so that buying one for yourself should be just a lucky as the one you "find" under the Christmas tree!

In the Middle Ages not only was finding a 4-leaf clover considered lucky but it was also believed to allow you to see faeries and plant sprites.

Only about 1 in every 10,000 plants will produce a lucky 4 leafed clover but it does seem as if some people have an "eye" for them and find them much more easily than others. And by causing gentic mutations the odds can be bought down to 1 in 41.

If you're like me and love sorting and sifting through the charms then just dive in on the image below and fossick to your heart's content!

3 Leaf Clover Charm - Shamrock Charm

The shamrock charm has only 3 leaves and is seen mostly as a religious symbol although some do also considered it to be a lucky charm.

The familiar version of the Irish word "seamair" (which means clover) is "seamróg". This eventualy became "shamrock" which is fairly close to the original Irish pronunciation.

The shamrock is believed to have been used by St Patrick to symbolize the Trinity on his fifth century pilgrimage to convert the Irish to Christianity. As his sermons and talks had to be translated into the Celtic language he no doubt would have found it helpful to use something as common as the shamrock plant to help people better understand his message. And so he would bend down and pluck a shamrock and explain that, just as a shamrock just had one stem, so Christianity had but one God. Yet that one God encompassed 3 divine beings, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost - just as the Shamrock's one stem becomes 3 leaves.

Even before the shamrock's encounter with St Patrick it was considered a sacred plant by the Druids of Ireland because of its three leaves - 3 being a magical number in the early Celtic religion. It is found on ancient tombs and coins.

It is easy to see how the shamrock's long association with religion - from even before Christianity - evolved into the shamrock charm holding religous significance and later into a belief in the lucky shamrock charm.

The term shamrock is usually used to describe white clover but the term is sometimes used for other clover species, wood sorrel and lesser yellow trefoil.

IMPORTANT

Chosing a charm is so much fun.

No matter where you buy your charm there are three things to always check so that you avoid disappointment.

Always check the actual written size of the charm you chose. Most are shown larger than the actual size so you can see the detail.

Always check the attachment so you know whether you can immediately attach it to your charm bracelet or whether you will need to get a jeweler to do it - or learn how to attach them yourself.

Always check what metal the charm is made from. Some charms come in a variety of metals and the image may not accurately show your choice.

In ancient times, charm bracelets were worn to protect the wearer from evil spirits and to please the gods.

Today, charm jewelry is a fun and engaging fashion accessory.
