In Norway it was believed that if you stared into a cat's eyes you would see the fairy world staring back at you.

The prophet Mohammed is said to have had a tabby cat which warned him of danger. The "M" on a tabby cat's brow is a sign of his blessing and the black stripes on the cat's back are where the holy man stroked it.

There are so many wonderful tales about cats and religion. Originally the Birman cat was plain brown cat until one jumped on the body of a Burmese priest who had been killed and the priest's spirit passed into the cat - where upon its body turned golden while its head, tail and legs remained brown. And the cat's feet became pure white as they were the part that had touched the holy man's skin.

And the marks on a Siamese cat's neck are the thumbprints of the gods when they picked the cats up to admire them.
