Evil Eye BraceletTraditionally the design on an evil eye bracelet is discs or balls consisting of concentric blue and white circles. The color usually went from inside to outside, and followed the pattern of dark blue, light blue, white and dark blue again. This is the type of design you will still see for sale in Turkish bazzars and this Turkish evil eye is what most people think of when they hear the term "evil eye". So it isn't surprising to see that the largest selection of evil eye bracelet come with a blue "eye" and if authenticity is important then this should be your choice of color. But the concept of the evil eye is strong in many cultures and not all use what we commonly think of as evil eye jewelry for protection. For example, protection against the Italian evil eye is by the wearing of Italian horn charms not a talisman representing an eye. For examples of the Egyptian evil eye charm, see bottom of page.

Italian Evil EyeBelief in the evil eye is common in most Mediterranean countries so naturally Italy has it's own protective amulet. The Italian evil eye is called Malocchio and usually put on a person unintentionaly through staring at them for too long. For this reason, it is not considered polite to admire babies and children to blatantly, or too stare at them for a long period of time - which doting motherly types sometimes do with the best of intentions. It is thought to be caused more through envy than evil design. The correct charm to turn the Italian evil eye back to the originator is the Italian horn charm. Frogs, bells and red ribbons are also considered protective against Malocchio. Turkish Evil EyeNazar Boncugu, which means evil eye bead, is the Turkish name for their evil eye charm. The charms on a Turkish evil eye bracelet should be blue because part of the protective influence comes from the color. You'll notice that many houses throughout the Mediterranean have blue doors - this is to fend off evil spirits. It is common to place an evil eye talisman on any item that other people might look at covetously such a baby, a prized animal, a car - anything that some one even with good intentions might look at and want. The designs shown above are typical of the Turksih evil eye. Egyptian Evil EyeThe Egyptian evil eye charm is the Eye of Horus. Horus was an Egyptian sky god and took the form of a falcon and it is the shape and marking around the falcon's eye that is the basis of this charm.

Subscribe to my Ezine below IMPORTANT Chosing a charm is so much fun. No matter where you buy your charm there are three things to always check so that you avoid disappointment. Always check the actual written size of the charm you chose. Most are shown larger than the actual size so you can see the detail.
Always check the attachment so you know whether you can immediately attach it to your charm bracelet or whether you will need to get a jeweler to do it - or learn how to attach them yourself. Always check what metal the charm is made from. Some charms come in a variety of metals and the image may not accurately show your choice.
In ancient times, charm bracelets were worn to protect the wearer from evil spirits and to please the gods.
Today, charm jewelry is a fun and engaging fashion accessory. |
