Points to remember

If a 14 karat gold charm bracelet is very cheap then you can be sure that it is gold plated. This is not necessarily a bad thing. If you want the look of gold without being able to afford the price then gold plated is a great choice.

Same thing goes for 18k gold bracelets. These will cost up over US$1000 for the real thing so if it is much less than that you know it is 18kt gold over sterling silver or that the 18kt gold is just a very small part of the bracelet.

Just make sure that you read the descriptions thoroughly so that you know what you are buying.

If you're confused about what the "k" rating is then remember that 24k gold is pure gold.

Everything else is a mix of gold and another metal. 18k gold contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts of another metal which makes it 75% gold.

14k gold contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts of another metal which makes it 58.3% gold. So a 14kt gold charm contains all the lustre and gleam of gold but at a price that is still within the reach of most buyers.

And 10k gold contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts of another metal which makes it 41.7% gold. This is the minimum karat designation that can still be called gold (in the United States.)
