Good Luck Charms

Good luck charms are worn to attract good luck or to ward off evil influences - or simply because you love charm jewelry! Although they have evolved over hundreds of years, there are still many people who believe if you wear the right charm good luck will follow you.

Lucky charms shapes - for example, 4 leaf clovers, horseshoes and rabbits feet - have evolved from many different cultures and are usually changed and adapted in the process.

There is a saying "the luck of the Irish" and many good luck charms have an Irish pedigree. Leprechauns, 4 leaf clovers and shamrock charms all have this Irish heritage.

Whereas the lucky rabbit foot traveled from Africa with the people stolen and sold into slavery and was adopted within a new country. Originally, African tribesmen would wear the foot of a speedy animal as a talisman to confer speed on themself - now we wear a lucky rabbit foot charm instead.

Horseshoes used to be made from iron which is a magnetic substance so that horseshoe charms are considered lucky as they were believed to draw money to you just as an iron horseshoe would draw other magnetic metals to it. It was also associated with one of England's favorite Saints - St Dunstan who had worked as a blacksmith.

Chinese good luck charms are very popular at the moment. It is certainly an easier and more practical way of wearing a Chinese symbol than having a tattoo!

And, of course Italy is home to the Italian horn charm which is believed to ward off the evil eye.

The Kabbalah red string bracelet is another style of charm bracelet for warding off the evil eye whilst also being a strongly religious amulet.

If you want a lucky bracelet you can either buy a ready made good luck charm bracelet with charms already attached OR buy an empty sterling silver charm bracelet (or gold charm bracelet) and fill the empty links with the symbols from those shown above that you believe will bring you the charm luck you desire.

IMPORTANT

Chosing a charm is so much fun.

No matter where you buy your charm there are three things to always check so that you avoid disappointment.

Always check the actual written size of the charm you chose. Most are shown larger than the actual size so you can see the detail.

Always check the attachment so you know whether you can immediately attach it to your charm bracelet or whether you will need to get a jeweler to do it - or learn how to attach them yourself.

Always check what metal the charm is made from. Some charms come in a variety of metals and the image may not accurately show your choice.

In ancient times, charm bracelets were worn to protect the wearer from evil spirits and to please the gods.

Today, charm jewelry is a fun and engaging fashion accessory.
