Almost all horseshoe charms are designed with the "ends" hanging down but if you read the article below you can see that this is probably not important - BUT, if it IS important to you - then take a look at these "up-pointing " horse shoe charms.

Which way up?

There are more superstitions surrounding the horseshoe than most lucky charm jewelry and many of these legends not only differ but completely contradict each other!

One of the more controversial and yet important - for a good luck charm - is whether horseshoe charms should be hung with the "ends" of the horseshoe pointing up or down.

Back in the days when a horseshoe was often attached to the front of a house to protect the people who lived there from bad luck and to attract good luck there were two schools of thought on its positioning. One group believed that it should be hung with the ends pointing upward so that it acted as a storage container for any good luck that happened to be floating by. This group believed that if the horseshoe was hung with the ends pointing down then the good luck will drain out.

In direct opposition, the other group believed that it does not matter which way you hang the horseshoe - good luck will still be attracted to the dwelling. This group believed that if the ends point down it simply means that the good luck is able to flow out and surround the home.

For those of us who love this style of charm jewelry it is reassuring that it doesn't seem to matter. You'll find most horseshoe charms have the ends pointing down because this is the easiest way to attach the charm. However there are a few designs where the ends point up so if this is important for you, you can still find a charm that suits.

Why are horseshoe charms lucky?

The blacksmith was thought to be a "lucky" trade because they worked with elemental forces - fire and iron - so that by association horseshoes were also considered lucky.

Did you know that horseshoes are usually held on the horses hoof by 7 nails? (It doesn't hurt the horse at all - their hoof is much like our fingernail.) Seven has always been considered an important and magical number. And horseshoes used to be made from iron - a metal that was thought to be magical with its ability to withstand fire and attract other metals.

Because faeries were believed to be repelled by iron and - in olden days a used horseshoe was always easy to find - horse shoes were used on houses to make sure that faeries did not enter.

Many people still believe that if you wear a horseshoe charm luck will be attracted to you and evil influences will be repelled. With this being one of the prettiest charms about - who am I to disagree!

IMPORTANT

Chosing a charm is so much fun.

No matter where you buy your charm there are three things to always check so that you avoid disappointment.

Always check the actual written size of the charm you chose. Most are shown larger than the actual size so you can see the detail.

Always check the attachment so you know whether you can immediately attach it to your charm bracelet or whether you will need to get a jeweler to do it - or learn how to attach them yourself.

Always check what metal the charm is made from. Some charms come in a variety of metals and the image may not accurately show your choice.

In ancient times, charm bracelets were worn to protect the wearer from evil spirits and to please the gods.

Today, charm jewelry is a fun and engaging fashion accessory.
