Italian horn charms are one of the most interesting of the lucky charm shapes. More correctly know as cornicello, which means "little horn" they are of a particular shape and are worn in Italy to protect the wearer against the evil eye.

Whilst Pugster do have some horn charms in their range they don't have any of the lucky Italian horn charms.

The horns are a twisted spiral shape rather like the horns of the African eland although as they are of European origin and were once sacred to the Moon Goddess, I suspect the shape is from some long forgotten Italian sheep or goat breed. Anyway they are definately NOT the shape of most modern sheep or goat horns.

They are worn to protect the wearer against the evil eye which is believed to harm nursing mothers and their babies, milking animals, male sperm and trees bearing fruit. Interesting to note that these are all forces of fertility and fruit bearing.

Italian horn charms are often seen as a male amulet as they were worn by Italian men to protect their "fruit-bearing" equipment - if you see what I mean! - from the evil eye.

Traditionally they were made of gold, silver or red coral. Silver was sacred to Luna the moon goddess and red coral was sacred to Venus the sea goddess so the custom has roots back in ancient pre-Christian religions. The most common ones you'll see in Italy are a red plastic type that looks like a red pepper!

The Italian horn charm is a lucky charm shape that is still close to its roots and many people of Italian descent still wear one to protect them against Malocchio, the Italian evil eye.
